Harvest Homecoming

Canvas Creations at Carver Community Center

Two large black lines were carved across a canvas nearly 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall in a curve reminiscent of some local country roads. It was difficult at that point to see where everyone would end up but it was clear it would be a rewarding journey.

Twenty art enthusiasts met in the gymnasium at Carver Community Center in downtown Chillicothe last Wednesday to create paintings for a follow-the-leader-style class. The event was the second in a series of activities designed to increase community integration for adults in our community with developmental disabilities.

Carol Uhrig, a former teacher at The Pioneer Center, led the class, with assistance from Patti Smith, a veteran teacher at Pioneer who undertakes a number of art projects with her class throughout the school year. Several members of the public joined the group, all of whom walked away with a new connection and a piece or art (some of whom jokingly admitted they were reluctant to call their painted canvas by that three-letter word). By the end of the two-hour class, the road that Ms. Uhrig was leading the participants down had become clear – a bevy of beautiful flowers filled the canvases and Carver Community Center’s gymnasium.
