OU-C’s Diversity in Education Visits Pioneer

Jamie Harmount, Assistant Professor at OU-C’s Early Childhood Education Center, brought 18 of her students to the Pioneer Center last week for a tour of the Pioneer School’s facilities. This trip has become an annual pilgrimage of sorts for those studying early childhood and/or special education at OU-C. Now in its 5th year, students observe some of the services and programs offered at the Pioneer School and then write a reflection paper about their experience. Ms. Harmount explained that these reflection papers often show solidification in her student’s choice to enter special education. On this trip, organized and led by Pioneer teacher Josh Tripp, OU-C’s Diversity in Education class observed a sign choir session (where students use sign language to convey the lyrics in popular songs), a tour of the therapy department and classrooms, and a Q&A session with staff members they encounter. Thank you to Professor Harmount and her students for visiting Pioneer, and for Josh Tripp for helping to introduce the next generation of educators to this wonderful field!
